How to Verify Research Peptide Purity Before You Buy
The biggest mistake researchers make when sourcing peptides is trusting a number without verifying where it came from. "≥98% purity" is easy to print on a website. A real Certificate of Analysis is harder to fabricate — if you know what to look for.
Step 1: Find the CoA
A legitimate vendor makes CoAs easy to find — directly on the product page, not buried in an FAQ. If a vendor cannot produce one at all, that is a hard stop.
Step 2: Check the HPLC Result
HPLC separates the components of a sample and measures what percentage is the target compound. You want ≥98%. The CoA should show the actual percentage — not just "meets specification" or a checkmark.
Step 3: Confirm Molecular Identity with Mass Spectrometry
HPLC tells you a compound is pure. Mass spectrometry (MS) tells you it is the right compound. The MS result should match the known molecular weight of the peptide you ordered. Without MS, a sample could be 99% pure and still be the wrong molecule. This matters most for structurally complex peptides like BPC-157 and CJC-1295, where synthesis errors can produce a chemically clean but biologically incorrect compound.
Step 4: Check the Batch Number and Lab Name
A CoA should be specific to the batch you are buying — with a lot or batch number, a testing date, and the name of the laboratory. A real third-party lab has a name you can look up. Generic CoAs without this information may be fabricated entirely.
Step 5: Verify GMP Manufacturing
GMP certification is an independent audit of the manufacturing process — covering cleanroom standards, equipment calibration, batch documentation, and contamination control. A good result on one batch from a non-GMP facility does not guarantee the next batch will match.
Red Flags at a Glance
- No downloadable CoA, or CoA is a webpage rather than a document
- CoA missing the lab name or batch number
- HPLC result without a corresponding MS result
- No GMP or FDA-registered manufacturing claim
- Prices that seem too low to be sustainable
